“I just finished the first session of Girls Rock! Chicago as a camp counselor. Getting to see 8-year-old girls on a Monday, then make it to Friday and be totally empowered, was amazing.

Girls Rock! Chicago is a nonprofit camp that happens twice during the summer for girls age 8 – 16. It teaches them about all kinds of music, and it challenges them to create a band, make a song, and they have a big showcase at the end of the week. It’s super special because it gives girls skills to add to a toolkit that also helps them navigate life. It’s really wonderful to see.

If I ever feel nervous on stage or in a situation, I think of [these girls] and the conversations we have about why we make music. They’re so excited and passionate, and they don’t care what anybody thinks. It’s nice to get to that space."
